When products just work: Boom Guide

When products just work
In these tight harbours, where you have to launch with wind from the back, its always a walk on glass shards to leave port and not be subjected to gusts rolling though and pushing you against another boat or even harbour walls.
The latter is precisely what we did.

The boat rammed bow first into the harbour wall with moderate speed after gust resulted in a spinout. It looked pretty much like the VO65 Sailing Poland collision.
Luckely, the boom was stuck on the mast step and the boom guide took in ALL of the impact, leaving the bow and the boom fully intact (at least visibly).

Yes, the product was smashed into pieces afterwards but was still within the boom. It is designed just like a bicycle helmet to only take impact once and never again and that is what it did.

The underlying Issue we are trying to solve
There is absolutely no guidance for the boom once it is being retracted. Even worse: on the 49er it is prone to bump into the mast step and break there. Since it is not allowed to repair booms at all, this is a shame.
The Boom Guide is there to gently guide the boom around the step and absorb any extra force if it either partially or fully fails to do so like it did in the above described scenario.
